Your Risks

Your Risks

There’s more to the challenges within physiotherapy

Like all health professions,  physiotherapy has been subject to varying levels of litigation against its members. Claims and complaints that can make the professional and ultimately the financial costs of physiotherapy practice considerable.

Working to equip physiotherapy

To assist practitioners and their staff in managing risk associated with professional practice,  Guild Insurance in association with the APA have provided Riskequip.

Throughout this resource, physiotherapists will be assisted to identify their risks, with solutions offered to assist in their management,  and access to tools and information that aim to educate and inform. All provided with the objective of equipping the profession to maximise the opportunities that come with managing risk .

Know your risks and know that basics matter

Guild’s experience in assisting health care practitioners to reduce their risk, and in defending claims,  reveals that best practice behaviours in daily processes such as diagnostics, in the recording and keeping of records, and in patient communication provide your best defence when it comes to litigated matters . More than this, quality practice bolsters the professionalism of your practice and the evidence of care provided to your patients

There are a range of risks faced in practice and in business, for ease of understanding they have been categorised in Riskequip into the following areas:

Practice risks - Risk arising directly from your professional practice.
General risks - Risk associated with the day to day running of the practice, tax, advertising, trade practices, employement, security, health and safety, etc.
External risks -

The external spaces around the practice that may be your responsibility.

Internal risks - The safety of your practice, waiting areas, consultation rooms.
Public practice - Physios in public practice can be brought into greater disputes - and they need to be aware of the need to document their contribution to care in how well protected they are.
Out of hours - Those tasks conducted away from the practice, social, sporting, contract or retired physios.

Managing risk helps in providing high quality professional care, but it is also about protecting your professional reputation and ultimately your ability to be a successful physiotherapist, and to continue to provide the quality care you provide.
