Security
The aim of good security systems is to make it very hard to gain access; and if access is achieved, encourage the offender to leave without further damaging the property.
Internal Security
Reduce risk during open hours, and damage from burglary.
- Opening and closing procedures should be in place and staff trained in them.
- Key system should be a master system or an electronic keypad system
- Additional security systems for high value items, specialist drugs, records and information technology
- CCTV – This has become far more affordable
- Monitored alarm with a back up system – Grade 1 monitoring
External Security
Lower the risk of break and entry crime.
- Secure all entry points, not just the main doors and windows
- Ensure your pharmacy is well lit (including rear entrances)
- Security Patrols provide a visible presence
- Shutters and grills highly effective (may not be appropriate in some locations)
- Reed switches on doors and windows
- Reinforced glass with glass break sensors
- Bollards where there is a reasonable risk of a car ram-style entry
- Deadlock-style locks on all windows and doors
- Security door on rear access
- Encourage awareness and consistent practices between traders
