Very few professionals are required to provide their skills and knowledge in such an open, potentially noisy, and high traffic environment.  Physically engineering your work place so that you can work with minimal interference is essential for your well-being.

It is also essential for error control.  Counseling and consultation are the primary roles of the pharmacist.  Don’t let other distractions get in your way. Good design of the dispensary will allow you to interact with patients for counseling and also provide privacy and quiet to improve concentration.

  • Redirect incoming phone calls to the service counter.
  • Space separation between dispensing and commercial functions.
  • Properly designed work stations.
  • Dedicated label and repeat printers.
  • Adjustable heights for benches and fittings.
  • Excellent ergonomics including noise control and workflow management.
  • Avoid double-handling, stretching and bending.
  • Use sloping drawers, carousels and other devices to systematize, and reduce inconvenience.
  • Adequate lighting appropriate to the environment and tasks.
  • Staff training  as to how and when to interact with the pharmacist.
  • Only permit those staff involved in the dispensing process to be in the dispensary.
